The Tzedek Tzedek Tirdof Attorney
sponsored by David and Debbie Astrove
IRAC is fortunate to have the partnership of Deborah and David Astrove in generously sponsoring the Tzedek Tzedek Tirdof Attorney.
IRAC's Legal Department has been at the forefront of the organization's activities for over 30 years. Its activities range from reviewing legislation for potential human rights violations, petitioning the courts on matters of discrimination, and assisting dozens of congregations across Israel with varying legal matters. The Legal Department is made up of four attorneys, each specializing in a different area of IRAC's core activities. The political and social implications of the department's work are tremendous and affect not only the current social texture of Israel but will affect the civic life in Israel for decades to come.
The Tzedek Tzedek Tirdof Attorney's work focuses on matters of pluralism, with a focus on providing services to Reform congregations and institutions in Israel. The Tzedek Tzedek Tirdof Attorney:
Assists Reform congregations around Israel to receive building and land allocations and tax breaks.
Represents cases of discrimination against Reform and progressive Judaism (for example: hotels that will not allow Reform groups access to Torah scrolls for their prayers).
Assists progressive communities to get public funding towards Jewish cultural programming.
Assists schools and educational organizations affiliated with the Reform Movement receive recognition and funding from the Ministry of Education.
"We are grateful for the opportunity to support IRAC in this manner. Anat Hoffman has provided a perfect answer to our search for meaningful charitable giving in a way that promotes pluralism in Israel. With so many Israelis self-identifying as 'secular' but already living lives that embrace the highest of progressive Jewish values, the continued growth of the progressive Jewish movement in Israel is inevitable if the depth, beauty, and complexity of pluralism is allowed to flourish throughout Israel, which we believe is in the best interest of Israel, America, and, frankly, Jews throughout the world. We are thrilled to enable Miri Nahmias, the first Tzedek Tzedek Tirdof Attorney, to be at the forefront of that effort and to hear in real-time of her challenges and successes."
